THE PHILIPPINES NATIONAL COSTUME
This is the traditional clothing of the filipino, its one
of the unique feminine and simply beautiful national costume in
Asia.
Actually this is originally called as barot saya and because it is a
philippine costume it was coined filipiniana.
This dress is no where to be found because it can only be seen in the
Philippines.
This filipiniana has different kinds - from the baro at saya, then
evolved to María Clara, where the panuelo on the neck was added, then
this María Clara evolved to traje de mestiza, where the half filipino
half Spanish, simply called mestiza are the one whose commonly wearing
it. This traje de mestiza has a featured of butterfly sleeves but
remained its panuelo on the neck (look at the V-shape), then it evolved
as terno the modern filipino dress where the panuelo was removed but
maintained its butterfly sleeves. Now it can be seen with different kind
of designs! |

Philippine Textiles
Various regions of the
Philippines are known for intricately woven materials, ranging from the
pinya cloth, a sheer fabric made of fibers of the leaf of the pineapple
plant, as woven in the province of Aklan, to colorful tapestries and
waist cloths of different tribes handloomed from decidedly Western
materials of mercerized cotton threads.

Piña is a fiber made
from the leaves of a pineapple plant and is commonly used in the
Philippines. Since piña is from a leaf, the leaf has to be cut first
from the plant. Then the fiber is pulled or split away from the leaf.
Most leaf fibers are long and somewhat stiff. Each strand of the piña
fiber is hand scraped and is knotted one by one to form a continuous
filament to be handwoven and then made into a piña cloth. |

Oliver Tolentino El Paseo Fashion Show Palm
Springs "The Philippines has been turning pineapple leaves and
abaca plant leaves into fabric for hundreds of years" - Remark 3
videos in the album
Born in Bataan province, fashion designer Oliver Tolentino
became the first Philippines-based designer to expand to the
United States when he opened a Los Angeles boutique on Melrose
Avenue in 2009. Within a year, he was chosen as one of nine
finalists in the Motion Picture Academy's Oscars Designer
Challenge at Downtown Los Angeles Fashion Week. Eco-friendly
materials have become an important part of Oliver's fashion
sense, and he promotes his native country's fabrics
internationally by including them in his collections. "My
country has been green long before it was fashionable," he
explains. "The Philippines has been turning pineapple leaves and
abaca plant leaves into fabric for hundreds of years; so out of
national pride, I want to show how elegant 'green' can be. ...
Piña, what we call the fabric from pineapple fiber, is naturally
off-white with an organza texture. It creates vintage-looking
gowns, but also can be dyed vibrant colors." |
