A little serious of our mind:

Try to imagine, that your grandchildren can´t speak with you in your language......

Learn your family the language of the roots, so your family - children can speak their language from childhood!

Learn your family the culture of the roots, so your family understand and respect the roots e.g. Mano Po!

Safe Water to All

Poor water quality has large economic and quality of life costs, in terms of health impacts and foregone revenues. According to the Philippine government's monitoring data, just over 36 percent of the country's river systems are classified as sources of public water supply and that up to 58 percent of groundwater sampled is contaminated with coliform and needs treatment. Approximately 31 percent of illnesses monitored for a five-year period were also caused by water-borne sources, and many areas are experiencing a shortage of water supply, during the dry season.

Dengue fever

also known as Breakbone fever

is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs.

Malaria

is a mosquito-borne infectious disease of humans and other animals caused by parasitic protozoans (a type of unicellular microorganism) of the genus Plasmodium. Commonly, the disease is transmitted via a bite from an infected female Anopheles mosquito, which introduces the organisms from its saliva into the person's circulatory system

Video

Malaria

is a potentially life-threatening disease caused by infection with Plasmodium protozoa transmitted by an infective female Anopheles mosquito. P falciparum infection carries a poor prognosis with a high mortality rate if untreated but has an excellent prognosis if diagnosed early and treated appropriately.

Malaria is a deadly disease in the rural areas. It is very hard to eradicate since most of the health beneficiaries are indigent and cannot afford the medications. Government programs as seen above subsidizes malaria treatment. Individuals traveling to malarial regions must be provided with adequate information regarding prevention strategies, as well as tailored and effective antiprotozoal medications.

After three decades of pursuing only the highest standards of service in medicine and healthcare, the city of Las Piñas now boasts of having in its midst one of the best-equipped, 4th level medical centers in the Philippines. The University of Perpetual Help Dalta Medical Center was first envisioned by its founders Dr. Antonio Laperal Tamayo, his wife Dr. Daisy Moran-Tamayo, and their close friend and associate Ernesto Palanca Crisostomo to be the realization of a longtime dream to pioneer quality healthcare in the once rustic areas of South Metro Manila. What they first built as a modest, 2-storey community hospital in 1975 (housing a mere 50 beds with a daily occupancy rate of 10 to 12 patients), today provides exemplary healthcare and medical service to a much larger community - the Filipino people.

Center for Babaylan Studies (CFBS)

CFBS is an organization that seeks to promote all indigenous and spiritual traditions from all parts of the Philippines. Its work is not restricted to one geographic location (i.e. the Visayas).

Babaylan is a Bisayan word that evolved from proto-Austronesian words in Southeast Asia such as belian, balian, balyan, baylan and bagdan. The Subanons call them balian, balean and balayan, women who lead the religious and death rituals in Mindanao. Its literal translation to English is ancient priestess or shaman.

Babaylan

was a prominent figure in pre-colonial Philippine society, sometimes described as a priestess or shaman. Babaylans acted as healers, prophets and mediums, curing illnesses and exorcising evil spirits from objects or people. The babayalan would often be called when the community was experiencing difficulties that could not be resolved by physical means. They would perform a ritual through chants or prayers to pacify the spirits that caused chaos in the community.

Pagdiwata Ritual at Manila Contemporary

Pagdiwata ritual is a family affair and is the focal point of Tagbanua life. Its activities embody their traditional sentiments and contribute to their persistence. It is also used for securing seance when people are sick especially when treated by their relatives as a medium. It includes offering of wine, nuts, wax, food and many other commodities. Pagdiwata is also an offering to celebrate a bountiful harvest or a successful hunting trip. Among all functionaries, the Babaylan (high priest/priestess) is the most powerful and influential. Folk tradition dictates that disrespect for the Babaylan will result in severe punishment by the supernaturals. Activities during the ritual:
a. Planting
b. War dance/ hunting
c. Harvesting
d. Tarek
e. Pagsuldan - the most prominent feature of the Pagdiwata wherein the Babaylan has possessed the spirits being called for.

Medicine Men of Agusan The Medicine Men of Agusan

in Mindanao, Philippines

BY SAMUEL GAABUCAYAN -  Cagayan de Oro, P.I.

The Healers

In the hierarchy of healers and specialists in Philippine folk medicine, the albularyo may be referred to as the "general practitioner." Knowledgeable in most of the folkloric modalities, the albularyo is especially versed in the use of medicinal herbs. The hilot ambiguously refers both to the manghihilot and magpapaanak. The manghihilot specializes in techniques and treatments applicable to sprains, fractures and muskuloskeletal conditions. The magpapaanak, besides prenatal visits and delivering babies, often performs the suob ritual. Some healers limit their practice of folkloric therapies to more specialized modalities. The mangluluop specializes in diagnostic techniques, usually referring the patients after diagnosis to the albularyo, medico, or manghihilot for definitive treatments. The medico is a further specialization, merging age-old folkloric modalities with ingredients of western medicine - 'prescription' medications, acupuncture, etc. Most of these healers consider their healing craft as God-given, a calling from a supernatural being, and consequently, their healing practices are profusely infused with prayers and religious rituals. Usually rural-based, they are also present in the urban and suburban communities, albeit in small scattered niches, serving burgis alternative needs, the impoverished or the urban-transplanted rural folk.

Albularyo, the Filipino herbalist

An albularyo' or hilot is a local medicine man or healer. The albularyo is knowledgeable in the application of medicinal herbs to cure various illnesses and their abilities are believed to be either spiritual or supernatural in origin.

Healing Ethnic Ritual

of The existence of primitive ethnic doctors here in Balbalan, popularly known by them as "mandadawak" is a living testimony that Balbalan tribes were once headhunters. Mandadawak play vital role then in the glorification of tribal warriors. To these days mandadawak are active and still occupies a high ladder in the leadership of the tribes of Balbalan not anymore for her services to headhunters but for those who are affected with illness that could no longer be cured in hospitals. They also performed other customary rituals such as ethnic baptismal, customary weddings, honoring the dead, thanksgiving, among others. This video portrays one of the mandadawak of the tribe of Balbalan in "curing" illnesses. The mandadawak has to, first of all, call the attention of a spirit to help her cure the disease. Following scenes were the acts of mandadawak appeasing the spirit to give her power over the other spirit who cause the sickness of her subject. The last scenes were the act of mandadawak portraying that she already captured the devil spirit using her body as the medium. The mandadawak was joined by relatives and neighbors of the ill-infected subject giving some donations probably for the services of the mandadawak.

This video was captured during a stage presentation about mandadawak during the centennial year celebration of Balbalan.

Sta. Lucia Falls - The Healing Waters of Mt. Banahaw

Mount Banahaw is one of the active volcanos in the Philippines. Part of a volcanic group, it is located along the boundary of Laguna and Quezon provinces, on the island of Luzon. The mountain and its environs are considered sacred by the local residents because of its "holy water", which allegedly have beneficial qualities, issuing forth from local springs and its "puwestos, or the "holy sites". These are composed of unique, natural features such as rocks, caves and springs with shrines erected in, on or around them, their location having been revealed to a man in the Spanish Era by the "Santo Boses" or the "Holy Voice".

Guyabano, The Soursop Fruit

has cancer curing abilities. The Sour Sop or the fruit from the graviola tree is a miraculous natural cancer cell killer 10,000 times stronger than Chemo. The taste is not bad after all. It’s completely natural and definitely has no side effects..

Guyabano is a tree called graviola in Brazil (and the Philippines) , guanabana in Spanish and has the uninspiring name “soursop” in English.

The fruit is very large and the subacid sweet white pulp is eaten out of hand or, more commonly, used to make fruit drinks, sherbets and such.

Rediscover many uses of coconut

”According to an old legend, coconut is God’s gift to the lazy man. “He sleeps in the shade of the tree, is awakened when a nut falls, drinks the milk, and eat some of the meat. He then feeds the rest of the meat to the chickens and cattle, which produce eggs and milk and meat, respectively. The leaves provide thatch for the roof and walls of his coconut hut, and are also woven into hats, baskets and mats.”

Coconut water is good for people with kidney problems. One Filipino doctor claimed: “two glasses of fresh buko juice every day can reduce one’s chance of having kidney or ureter stones.”

This problem usually occurs when the quality of food, beverages as well as the service falls short of client's expectation. Due to these problems, the proposed business will see to it to have an additional accommodation to accommodate the tourist who offenly visited the San Benito Farm expecting a quality and service efficiency with the food service and quality management.

The Danger of Tongue Piercing

Piercing is one of the most prevalent form of body art and self-expression. But body piercing should not be a frivolous, spur-of-the-moment act. Why? It's a surgical procedure that is frequently carried out in beauty salons or tattoo/piercing parlors that are completely unregulated. Worse yet, body parts are also pierced at concerts and in people's garages, basements and bathrooms.

Philippine's ailing healthcare

The World Health Organisation (Who) says the Philippine government needs to step up support for public healthcare as more slums spring up in the capital Manila. Part of the problem is the country's low level of spending on public healthcare, which is less than two per cent of its annual budget. The government says it is working towards a more comprehensive health plan for all Filipinos. - Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Manila on Apr 7, 2010

Jay explained about Globe warns of new text scam

MANILA, Philippines - Published on Jan 31, 2013 Globe Telecom, Inc. on Tuesday advised postpaid subscribers to be cautious of text scams which entice people by telling them they can get discounts or rebates on their monthly bills. "Subscribers are requested to validate unusual texts and calls especially if they do not come from official four-digit Globe numbers," the telco firm said in a statement. "Texts and calls of this nature have a primary motive of asking for personal information, soliciting money or prepaid load, or using your account to purchase items online." One of those circulating "promo" messages reads: GLOBE Postpaid: Congrats! You're the one selected postpaid plan given P150 discount billing, to get your P150 discount billing just text 150 send to 2916XXXXXXX. Globe stressed that adding a "2" before the 10-digit mobile number of the recipient results in a Share-A-Load transaction, which means the victim would have transferred the amount to the scammer after pressing the "Send" button. "It is best not to respond, and immediately report suspicious texts or calls to authorized Globe customer service channels," the firm said.

Short Message Service (SMS)

Text messaging, or texting, is the act of typing and sending a brief, electronic message between two or more mobile phones or fixed or portable devices over a phone network. While the original term was derived from referring to messages sent using the Short Message Service (SMS) originated from Radio Telegraphy, it has since been extended to include messages containing image, video, and sound content (known as MMS messages). The sender of a text message is known as a texter, while the service itself has different colloquialisms depending on the region: it may simply be referred to as a text in North America, Australia, the Philippines and the United Kingdom, an SMS in most of mainland Europe, and a TMS or SMS in the Middle East and Asia.

SMS for the Blind

Philippines students develope a program allowing the visually impaired to read text messages.

Thanks to a new invention by university students in the Philippines, blind people may be able to use mobile phones with much more ease. Engineering students created a mobile phone for the visually impaired by putting a braille pad on the console to help them read and send text messages. One of the country's largest mobile phone networks is now looking into developing and distributing the braille units at an affordable price.

SMS for those both deaf and blind

PocketSMS is a free app for Android phones, which could be used by people who are deaf and blind to read SMS and send a reply via SMS. The application communicates by converting the message into vibrations using the Morse Code for reading the SMS and allows users to use any installed keyboard, such as Graffiti, to respond. Before this, the deaf-blind could only electronically communicate using refreshable Braille devices costing thousands of dollars.
